Recycled Sneakers

Whether you're a runner, a hiker or a fashionista,
Your feet would be naked without shoes.
But when you no longer love your old Birkenstocks,
Donate them -you've got nothing to lose!

There's no hiding it-when your toes are poking through the leather, it's time to buy new shoes. But when your kids outgrow their Weeboks or when your High Tops go out of style, pitching them in the waste bin is the worst thing you can do. Here are a few ways to make your shoes more eco-friendly:

  • Save your soles from a ground burial by walking them over to your nearest Goodwill or clothing donation center.
  • If your shoes are heavily worn or if Fido thinks they're his new chew toy, donate your "tennies" to a sneaker recycling program such as Nike's Reuse-A-Shoe, which breaks down used sneakers into material that can be used to make athletic tracks and children's playgrounds. http://www.nikereuseashoe.com/
  • When it's time for a new pair, consider buying sustainable shoes made from things like old car tires, hemp and crepe. http://www.simpleshoes.com/
