Soy Meets World
The cultivation and use of soybeans has exploded recently. Soybeans are being used in a wide range of applications and there is no end in sight. There are many benefits to soybeans but where and how they are cultivated must also be taken into account.
• The United States Soybean Board (USB) is committed to helping fund research, development, and commercialization of new industrial applications for soybeans. Some of these uses include adhesives, coatings and printing inks, lubricants, plastics and specialty products.
• Soybeans are composed of approximately 18% oil and 38% protein. Nearly all soybeans are processed for their oil and the remaining high protein fiber is usually used to make animal feed.
• Simple processing of soybeans can produce a viable biofuel for diesel engines. The fuel can potentially reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 78% compared to petroleum diesel, is non-toxic, renewable, and environmentally friendly.
• Soy foods are rich in vitamins and minerals, including folate and potassium. Soy has also attracted attention of researchers for its potential to aid in weight management, muscle development, bone maintenance, and to reduce the risk for chronic disease.
