Commercial Eco-Lighting
Millions of bulbs thrown away, Energy costs rising every day, Induction lights are here for you, To save the Earth and money too!
Saving the Planet One Watt at a Time
Commercial properties across the country are discovering one of the best-kept secrets in "energy efficient" lighting, the induction light bulb. An induction light uses the fundamental principles of electromagnetic induction and gas discharge to create a high quality white light without the use of electrodes. Here are some of the amazing advantages of using induction lighting.

Extremely Long Lifespan - Induction light bulbs last 100,000 maintenance-free hours, which translates to significant operation cost savings.
Electricity Cost Savings - Induction lights are between 50-90% more "energy efficient" than current commercial lighting. One 150-watt induction bulb will replace up to a 450-watt light!
Excellent Color Rendering - A Color Rendering Index (CRI) of 85+ and a range of color temperatures (CCT), allows induction lights to display true, natural colors.
Utility Company Rebates - Utilities throughout the country are installing and/or promoting induction lighting through tax incentives and rebates.
Additional Advantages - Low heat gain, instant on/off, no flickering or noise, stable light output, dimmable, operates in range of temps and input voltages, and alleviates eye stress/fatigue.

Resole
Hey, everyone, we've got some great news,Now you can extend the life of your shoes!
If you don't have a dog at home chewing up your laces, the first thing that usually goes on your favorite pair is the sole. When the insides of our shoes are uncomfortable or worn out, we regretfully toss them aside and head to the shoe store. But even with Buy One, Get One Half-Off sales and discount stores abound, every pair of shoes racks up, and every pair you dispose of grows a landfill even bigger.

These days, many people don't have time to seek out the nearest shoe repair shop. However, a company called resole.com offers a mail-order service to fix several brands of shoes.
Using the site is a simple 3-step process. First you locate your shoe brand, then you print out a UPS Shipping Label from the site and send off your shoes. Finally, within 8 to 10 business days, you'll have your shoes back with new soles!
Depending on the type of shoe and repair needed, you can generally get away with spending between 15 and 70 bucks, cheaper than buying a new quality pair of footwear.
Resole.com not only resoles your every-day shoes, but also sells hard-to-find shoe accessories such as Birkenstock buckles and leg lifts, and offers affordable repair to fire rescue boots as well as military boots!
With resole.com you're not flat-out wasting resources. Think about it: to buy new shoes, you have to grab your car, polluting the air with carbon emissions. Then you generate a receipt, a cardboard shoe box, packing materials and a plastic shopping bag...what will you do with them?

Do You Still You Use Phonebooks?
Phonebooks everywhere, Thrown away without a care, The Earth is giving us a sign, Find phone numbers online!
Calling on You
Millions upon millions of phone books are delivered to U.S households every year. This equates to hundreds of thousands of pounds of paper being thrown out annually. If you want to stop this senseless waste, here's how to opt out of your current scheduled delivery of paper phonebooks while still maintaining your ability to find local businesses, services, and individuals.

To opt out of future deliveries of your local phone book, simply look for the number of the publisher in the book itself. Call the number and tell them that you want to opt out of future directories.
Other opt out options include signing up to be removed from local distribution lists through sites such as YellowPagesGoesGreen and Paperless Petion.
To recycle old, unused phonebooks, simply place them in your curbside-recycling bin. In some regions, separate recycling is required and can be found at Keep America Beautiful.
Use online phone directories. There are many great online resources for finding local businesses, services, and individuals.

Here is the Class of 2009
Smart2BeGreen is pleased to announce it's Top 10 Green Heroes of 2009. This year the list was voted on by the readers who subscribe to the Smart2BeGreen newsletter and green philosophy. Readers chose leaders in environmental awareness that have inspired us by demonstrating that small steps can yield great results towards a greener future.
Smart2BeGreen readers submitted many inspired choices. Narrowing the field this year was simplified because we simply tallied the most nominations.
1. Yvon Chouinard: Patagonia Founder Fights for the Environment. Patagonia has donated 1 percent of its annual sales to grass-roots environmental groups, and it has gotten more than 1,200 companies to follow its lead as part of its "1% for the Planet" group. Patagonia has managed to persuade companies like Nike, Timberland, and even Wal-Mart to begin switching to organic cotton.
2. Dave Matthews Band: This popular band offsets the CO2 emissions produced by their multi-city tours by funding projects such as tree plantings and wind turbine construction.
3. Pierce Brosnan: The former Bond now focuses on marine mammal and wetland protection, is a very visible and active member of the Natural Resources Defense Council campaign against effects of Navy sonar on whales and has been awarded the Green Cross International Environmental Leadership Award.
4. Los Angeles teenager Ally Maize, founded of The Green Youth Movement at 15 years old as a way to educate youth on environmental protection and sustainability. Two years later, at the ripe age of 17, Ally continues to lead the group that organizes green events, sells green gear and products to raise money and participates in green events, like tree plantings.
5. Josh Dorfman, host of The Lazy Environmentalist, a popular Sundance Channel offering, breaks down being green into easy, attractive, doable steps that even a "lazy" person could get on board with.
6. Joshua Onysko, Founder and CEO, Pangea Organics: Pangea Organics was founded on the principle belief that together, we can create a new, more sustainable future. We, for example, have chosen to help do so one bottle, bar and jar at a time. We are a small, independent manufacturer of organic body care. But more than that, we are a community of like-minded people who believe in creating products that help rather than harm at every stage of their lifecycle.
7. Steven Chu, Secretary of Energy: A Nobel Prize-winning physicist with a track record in working toward energy efficiency. As Director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Chu gained a national reputation as a speaker; among other things, he liked to point out that companies who claimed they couldn't possibly cut back energy use suddenly manifested miracles of efficiency when they stopped paying lobbyists and hired engineers instead
8. Leilani Munter, Race Car Driver & Environmentalist: Sports Illustrated named her in their list of the top ten female race car drivers in the world. Leilani adopts an acre of rainforest for every race she runs to offset her carbon footprint and has been a long time vegetarian and eco activist. She is currently putting together a race program she calls her "Eco Dream Team" that will reach out to NASCAR fans to make eco- minded changes to their lives.
9. Jim Moriarty, the Surfrider Foundation's chief executive officer. "The people at Surfrider are passionate about the preservation and enjoyment of the world's oceans, waves and beaches for the enjoyment of everyone.
10. Laird Hamilton, Surfer is the best known big wave rider of the modern era. This understated ambassador of surfing and water sports is also an environmental activist. He joined a protest in Malibu against a proposed plant that was to be built in the area, which would affect the quality of the water. He is a true green crusader.

Corn Yarn has flat strands and is made from corn fiber. It is both machine-washable and dryable, and is incredibly light-weight.
Sea Silk Yarn has fine shimmery strands and is made with real silk as well as "Seacell®" (a combination of wood pulp fibers and seaweed). Moths are attracted to this material, so take care to protect your clothing by making natural mothballs.

Eco-BubblesIf enjoying soda has become a mustTry a product you can definitely trustMake your favorite flavors from homeAnd create your own bubbles and foam.
Do It YourselfIf you consider yourself a soda connoisseur or can't seem to break the sweet habit, try making your own soda at home. In addition to ditching those pesky aluminum cans and bulky plastic bottles, you can also create your own unique flavors.

Delicious and easy on the wallet - you won't be breaking the bank buying cases of soda each week. Home soda makers are able to turn tap water into sparkling water in seconds, with little to no mess. Bubble to your taste preference and then add your favorite flavors like diet cola or root beer.
Less packaging means less waste from sodas and water bottles. Home soda machines are considered an "active green" product because every time you use one, you are actively lowering your carbon footprint. In addition by ditching the packaging you'll lessen the pollution load by saving on transportation fees.
Leave crazy chemicals like high fructose corn syrup in the past. When comparing the two, home soda machines contain about 9 grams of sugar whereas their traditional counterpart contains around 27 grams of sugar.

Eco Baby Bottles
From the time they're bornTil' the time they toddle,Keep them safe and greenWith eco-friendly bottles.
Babies have an unavoidable oral fixation, so ensure that the thing that goes into their mouths most often is safe! Opt for BPA-free plastic bottles or even glass bottles with silicone nipples and avoid purchasing baby products that contain the following:

Bisphenol A (BPA) bottles, are rigid plastics. When BPA leaches into formula in large quantities, it has the potential to cause developmental harm in infants.
Polyvinyl chloride, or PVC, can be found in many infant teething toys as well as some bottles. In fact, it is one of the most popular plastics because it is inexpensive and simple to work with. However, in high volumes, PVC has been found to damage the organs of lab animals, and can even cause cancer.
Phthalates maximize the flexibility and life-span of many plastics, including some baby bottles, but they put infants at the most risk for problems with their endocrine and reproductive systems.

This year while you're getting ready to partake in all the Mardi Gras madness, try a few smart tips to make this over-indulgent holiday still eco-friendly.

Do a project with the kids and make your own Mardi Gras beads from supplies around the house. Generally made from scraps of paper or junk mail, it's an easy way to recycle random papers piling up, while also prepping for Mardi Gras fun.
Keep adults entertained with homemade hurricane margaritas and authentic (and organic) New Orleans cuisine. Whether you're whipping up frosty beverages or adding the final touches to red beans and rice, you'll keep party revelers' mouths watering with authentic Louisiana cuisine.
Make your own King Cake to end your party on a sweet note. Traditionally used to celebrate religious festivals, King Cake usually has a little baby hidden inside it somewhere. Make it a fun game by having the person who finds it do something silly or even make the cake for next year.

Chemical Free Cat Litter
Every time kitty makes poop, We quickly flush or scoop, Protect your little critter,Buy chemical-free cat litter!
Here's the ScoopAlthough the dangers of clumping, scoopable, and flushable kitty litter are widely debated, it would behoove the prudent cat caregiver to look into natural alternatives. Protect the health of your feline friend, yourself, and the planet by choosing a non-toxic, eco-friendly cat litter. Here are a few reasons why.

Clay clumping litters are made from clay that is strip-mined which is very destructive to the planet. Furthermore, clay sediment also contains a dangerous form of carcinogenic silica, which if inhaled or eaten can damage a cat's lungs.
Scoopable litters contain a powerful clumping agent called sodium bentonite, which if mixed with liquid will swell to a mass 15 times larger than its original volume. This can have profound effects on cats' gastrointestinal and immune systems.
Here are some great non-toxic, chemical-free options: Feline Pine, World's Best Cat Litter, Swheat Scoop, and Ultimate Cat Litter.

Green Washing
Lies slip through the crack, Cause green is the new black,Don't believe everything, Beware of greenwashing!
The Corporate Spin-Cycle
These days, consumers are constantly bombarded by companies, products, services, and ad campaigns that claim to be green or environmentally friendly. However, too often companies and corporations practice "green washing," which according to Greenpeace is the "cynical use of environmental themes to whitewash corporate misbehavior." Here are a few ways from Greenpeace to spot these environmental frauds.

Dirty Business - Stay away from companies who tout themselves as green when the service or product they offer is inherently bad for the environment.
Ad Bluster - This happens when a company spends more time and money marketing an environmental achievement then it did actually doing it. Many times this is used as a way to focus on one environmental success while many failures are swept under the rug.
Political Spin - This is the act of advertising, endorsing, or speaking about green commitments or programs while lobbying against pending or current environmental legislation.
It's the Law Stupid - Many companies will advertise or brand their environmental achievements as voluntary or proactive. In reality, they have been forced to comply by mandated environmental regulations.

Bring Your Own Towels
Wash'em and dry'emBut hands-down no wayDon't throw any more Paper towels away!
Paper products occupy up to 40% of the space in our landfills, including the paper towels you dry your hands with at work, at the movies, and when you eat out. When eco-friendly hand driers and the legs of your pants aren't an option, what's a green person to do to help out the environment and avoid chapped, dry hands?

Bathroom Hand Towels - It's time to employ the same hand-drying habits we use at home - after all, how many people have paper towel dispensers in their own bathrooms? Bring a small hand towel to work with you and clip it to your bag or put a hook inside your cubicle. If you generally use 8 paper towels each work day, you could save nearly 200 paper towels each month by bringing in your own towel!
People Towels is a company that sells sets of eco-friendly quick-drying towels as well as clips so that you can carry them with you wherever you go. If everyone used these towels to dry their hands, there would be significantly less deforestation, polluted water and methane gas - all of which are consequences of the manufacturing and decomposing of paper towels.
Green Your Office - Start a trend at the office by buying a pack of People Towels and sharing them with your coworkers. The more people that use them, the less money your company has to spend on restocking the towels in the restrooms, and the greener your business will be!

Indoor Art QualityIf your home is looking kind of bareIt's time to add some artistic flairAdd some pieces from local artistsAnd give your walls an eco-twist.

Fine Eco-Art

Handmade and recycled materials have become increasingly popular among eco-friendly artisans. Often times crafted from local materials, the pieces are not only interesting and beautiful, but can also be representative of the community you live in.
Green materials can include anything from beach glass to reclaimed wood, or even broken CDs. Part of what makes recycled art so interesting (and unique) is that much of the material being used was once part of something else and is being recreated into something new.
Do it yourself by using old junk piling up around the house. Use old phone books, scratched CD's or even broken plates to create one of a kind frames or jewelry. Look online for ideas on how you can make junk into art.

Recycling Made EasyIt's easy to be overwhelmedWhen you're not sure what to doSo here's a few tips meant to makeRecycling easier for you!
Want to get the 4-1-1 on recycling so you can start the year off green by treating the environment right? Here's some simple info on the what, where and how of recycling in your home.

Recycle Containers - While fancy recycling containers with multiple compartments that can crush cans and make julienne fries might be nice, they're not a financial possibility for many of us. However, a simple box, extra plastic trash can or even a few paper bags in the corner of your kitchen or garage is really all you need to sort and hold your recyclables.
Recyclable Items - Virtually all newspapers, magazines, phone books, white paper, junk mail, cardboard, cereal boxes, glass, aluminum and tin cans are recyclable. As for plastics, just turn the bottle or jug upside down to look at the number. Most communities accept #1 and #2 plastics, and many recycling centers recycle several other numbers as well.
Recycling Locations - If you're not lucky enough to have a truck pick up your bins, there are still many options. Drop off your bottles and cans at a smaller kiosk for some extra cash, or sort cardboard, tin cans and even electronics at full-on recycling center locations.

Eco-friendly humidifiers have made it easy to keep your home moisturized while also keeping energy and water costs down. Although they need to be installed, green humidifiers use 50% less water than their old-fashioned counterparts.
Humidifiers do more than just ward off dry air. They also make your home more comfortable for people with allergies or respiratory problems by adding hydrating moisture in the air we breathe.
Indoor plants naturally act as a humidifier and are the greenest way to keep moisture in the environment. Rated one of the best household plants, areca palms release moisture into the air while also removing harmful chemical toxins.

Take Back the Tap
Next time you have thirst,Don't unscrew that cap,Think about the Earth first,Drink water from the tap!
Just Give it a Little Tap
College campuses, cities, and restaurants across the nation have pledged to kick their bottled water habits by joining the Take Back the Tap campaign. The truth is that bottled water is not generally safer, cleaner, or healthier than water from the tap. The time has come, America, to take back the tap!

The EPA as well as state and local governments regulate tap water. Unfortunately, bottled water is only subjected to the FDA's guidelines, which are years behind the EPA standards.
Environmentally, bottled water creates a huge amount of waste. Furthermore, it wastes fossil fuels and water in production, releases green house gases, and its components can leach into water supplies and cause health problems.
Tap water costs roughly $0.002 per gallon while bottled water can cost anywhere from $0.89 to $8.26 per gallon. The reality is that 40% of bottled water is nothing more than tap water with added minerals.
Every year we fall more than $20 billion short of what is needed to maintain our public water and sewage systems. Congress needs to establish a clean water trust fund to ensure that current and future drinking water supplies are safe and healthy.

Solar Powered Trash cans
Garbage is all around, Full trash cans abound. Want to help your town?Solar cans will astound!
Sunny Days Keep Trash Trucks Away
Every day, millions of trash cans around the U.S. are filled, collected, and emptied. Garbage trucks running on fossil fuels make countless daily pick-ups of our refuse and transport it to overfilled dumpsites.

The Big Belly Solar Compactor is a revolutionary trash receptacle that uses solar power for 100% of its energy needs. It is safe, easy to use, keeps out pests, and is designed to withstand all weather conditions.
The capacity of the Big Belly is 5 times greater than standard trash bins. This reduces the number of required collection trips and can cut fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by 80%.
Depending on collection frequency, a standard trash bin costs between $7,300 and $30,000 over its lifetime. The lifetime operational costs of the Big Belly are between $6,000 and $12,000.
Over 2,000 Big Belly systems have been sold across the U.S. and in 17 countries around the world. For example, the city of Philadelphia has reduced its trash collection trips by 75% by replaced 700 trashcans downtown with 500 Big Bellies.

Recycling Fun FactsIt's time to get things straightOn exactly why recycling is greatIf you start to learn the factsYou'll leave behind green tracks.
Green TipsWith the New Year finally here, try adding "avid recycler" to your list of resolutions. Keep reading for a few tips on how easy it is to make recycling one of your resolutions this year!

Recycling cans and bottles may seem basic, but is one of the easiest ways you can reduce your carbon footprint with little or no extra effort. Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a TV for three hours!
Recycle old scrap paper that may be hanging around the house. Between junk mail and used pieces of computer paper, you'll be surprised at how fast you can fill the recycling bin up. Americans use 85,000,000 tons of paper a year: about 680 pounds per person.
Check labels to see if some of your favorite household products are recyclable. Products such as aluminum foil are often overlooked, but can be thrown in the recycling bin along with (aluminum) cans and glass. Americans toss out enough aluminum every three months to rebuild our entire commercial air fleet, according to the Aluminum Association.

Concentrated Solar Power (CSP)
Mirrors, mirrors all around, Helping to collect sunlight, Mirrors, mirrors do astound, By producing energy right!
Mirrors for Fears
Next time you look in the mirror, know that the sun is also looking at its own reflection in millions of mirrors at concentrated solar power (CSP) plants around the world. CSP technology is a cost-effective and scalable way to successfully enjoy renewable solar energy.

CSP technology utilizes small, flat mirrors called heliostats to precisely track the movement of the sun. The heliostats focus sunlight onto a receiver on top of a tower.
The focused sunlight collected by the receiver is then used to boil water, which creates steam. The steam is used to power a conventional turbine and generator, creating electricity.
Specializing in CSP technologies, the company eSolar has designed and deployed over 1.5 GW of projects globally. These projects range from 46 MW to over 500 MW and are scalable to any size.
eSolar's Sierra Sun Tower, the only commercial CSP tower in the United States, supplies electricity to Southern California Edison and powers up to 4,000 homes.

Green New Year's Resolutions
Some hope to lose weightSome to be better menWhy not pledge to be greenerin the year two-thousand ten?
Smart2begreen's goal is to bring awareness to the multitude of small steps we can all make to help benefit our lives as well as the environment. Here are some simple changes you can make all year long as part of your Green New Year's Resolutions:

Recycle more! Some smaller recycling kiosks only take bottles and cans, but did you know full recycling centers take cereal boxes, junk mail, phone books and even your old electronics?
Take your own lunch to work in a reusable bag or container - save money, create less waste and savor last night's yummy leftovers today!
Buy a shopping bag...or four. Many stores, such as Ralph's and Target, are now giving you cash back for carrying reusable shopping bags. Cutting out the paper and plastic gives you a more durable and comfortable way of carrying your groceries while also reducing waste and allowing you to earn money.
Use cloth napkins. Every time your family does, you save money (and trees).
Carpool. Next time you're hanging out with friends, ask to carpool. Split the cost of gas and parking and minimize pollution at the same time!
Shop organic. Fresh and natural foods taste great, benefit local farmers and don't contain harmful chemicals, antibiotics and pesticides that are detrimental to the environment.

Double Duty Shipping Boxes
In the mail from Santa's sleighcame boxes full of bootyDon't let those boxes go to wasteMake them pull double duty!
Just as you reuse gift boxes and bags year after year, shipping boxes that bring you first-class presents and online orders throughout the year can be reused, with fairly minimal effort on your part.

Reduce clutter: If you're not ready to ship anything out just yet, break the boxes down with a box cutter or scissors and fold them flat under a bed or inside your closet.
Repeat performance: Before reshipping an old box, make sure that you cover up any old barcodes or labels so as not to confuse the shipping company or postal workers.
A hole in one: If you want to reuse a box that has a small hole in it, use carton sealing tape to properly patch it so it will not reopen in transit.
Share the wealth: Infrequent shippers and those with very little storage space in their homes may want to advertise shipping boxes for free on Craigslist. Depending on the amount and size of your empties, you may only have to wait an hour or two for someone to come by and clean you out.

Holiday Office Party
'Tis the season to be jollyAnd to enjoy a work partyGive a coworker a little extra cheerBy re-gifting a present from last year.
Regifting
It's just about time to start gearing up for the infamous office party that you and your coworkers look forward to each year. Try regifting a present (that's still unused) to your Secret Santa, work party, or local charity.

Secret Santas have become a popular gifting tradition in many offices. Save time and money by regifting a present that's still sitting wrapped in your closet to one of your coworkers who might appreciate it.
Charities like Toys for Tots or the Salvation Army have taken the place of gift giving in many offices. Get into the true holiday sprit by regifting to those who aren't as fortunate as you.
Throw a regifting party at your office or even with your friends. Make it a requirement to give something that you've been given and see what everyone comes up with.

Hanukkah Gifts
Hanukkah is called the Festival of LightsWith candles lit and presents wrappedFor eight sacred nights. And it's not any less of a wondrous holidayWith greener gifts and reusable wrapJust try it out, whaddya say?
Eight days of presents can be a bit overwhelming when it comes to wrapping paper, tape and your wallet. This year, make your Hanukkah giving a little greener.

Reusable bags are the best way to stay green for Hanukkah. If you purchase a set of 100% organic cotton reusable gift bags and gift wrap for your family, you may never have to buy (or throw away) wrapping paper ever again. This saves both the Earth and your bank account in the long run, not to mention that it's easier wrapping oddly-shaped gifts if you put them in a bag instead!
Planting a tree in Israel this Hanukkah is a fabulous way to honor both your loved ones and the environment. The Jewish National Fund has been memorializing and honoring people all over the world for over 100 years, and when you purchase a tree, the recipient you designate will be sent a special certificate notifying them of the generous donation you've made in their name.
Sustainable gifts are a creative and thoughtful Hanukkah treat for like-minded budding environmentalists. The wonderful themed gift bags at Tikkun Olam-LAC are 100% organic, kosher, fair trade, recyclable or reusable. The Hanukkah gift bag is the perfect present for anyone celebrating the holiday this season!

Organic Candles
Procrastinating for the holidayswill only make you panicSo plan ahead and buy your candles nowand make sure they are organic!
Winter holidays all over the world commence in festivals of light as candles burn to signify the past, present and future of many religious and ethnic communities. This year, make the conscious choice to light only organic candles during your holiday celebrations.

Beeswax Hanukkah candles can be purchased online and in many Judaica and home goods stores. Hanukkah begins at sundown on December 11th so be sure to pick up your candles before Friday! These candles burn longer and are virtually dripless. In addition, the natural beeswax is safer for your loved ones to be around and for the environment.
Decorate your home with festive Christmas holiday candles made from natural soy or palm oil, which is extracted from oil palm tree fruit without the use of chemicals. Both types of candles burn slowly and produce very little soot. In addition, purchasing soy candles helps support soy bean farmers.
The Kwanzaa celebration begins on December 26th. For a fun family craft, roll your own Kwanzaa candles this year with an all-natural Beeswax Honeycomb Candle Kit from the Ohio State University Honey Bee Laboratory.

Between you and me,Let me throw you a vine, Sustainability is the key, Order a glass of green wine!
Wineries Uncork Sustainability
With the popularity of wine, it is important to ensure that wineries are using sustainable agricultural methods. By supporting wineries that implement sustainable, natural, biodynamic, and organic practices, you help ensure the economic, environmental, and societal viability of the wine community.

California is leading the sustainable winery charge. The Green Wine Summit and the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance have been established to promote and establish the benefits of sustainable winegrowing practices.
In Oregon, wine sustainability is not a buzzword. A wine labeled an Oregon Certified Sustainable Wine (OCSW) is ensured to have been produced using environmentally responsible agricultural and winemaking practices.
Australia has numerous sustainable wineries. All across the continent, wineries are producing amazing wine blends from organic grapes.
You can find organic wineries all over the world. Fork & Bottle has compiled an extensive master list of 529 natural and biodynamic wine producers from across the globe.

Naughty or Nice DeIcer?
Winter makes for slippery roads; We humans melt the ice.But deicers using salt and sandAre naughty to Earth, not nice!
Too much salt's not good for anyone and the same is true for Mother Earth. The sodium chloride used to deice roads in winter corrodes metal, threatens plants and crops, and can slowly poison fish and other aquatic creatures. Sand is also used to improve traction on icy surfaces, but it can clog sewers and storm drains and reduce air quality as it gets brushed off of people's tires. To make your sidewalk less slippery this winter, consider using the following eco-friendly deicers instead:

Deicers are now being made naturally. In lieu of straight-up deicing rock salt, try a mixture of salt and beet juice. Commercially this mixture is called Geomelt, but mixing up a DIY batch shouldn't be too tough. Your sidewalk may temporarily be stained brown, but it's a small price to pay for protecting the environment.
Keep it Green is an eco-friendly snow and ice melting product made of potassium acetate and CMA (calcium magnesium acetate). The product also includes nutrients that help fertilize the earth later!
Natural Alternative® Ice Melt has a long shelf life and does not contain sodium or calcium chloride. It will melt ice that is as low as -12 degrees Fahrenheit and won't leave behind any residue.

Cell Phones for Soldiers
Fighting far across the sea, No contact with their families, Donate your old cell phoneTo let a soldier call home.
Call of Duty
Cell Phones for Soldiers is a non-profit organization that turns your old cell phones into useable minutes of prepaid calling cards for U.S. soldiers stationed overseas. Sacrificing their lives and time with their families, our troops deserve to at least be provided with the means to contact their loved ones.

Donated cell phones are sold to a recycling company called ReCellular. Recycling is important seeing that Americans replace an estimated 130 million cell phones each year.
Cell Phone donation is simple and free. Printable postage paid shipping labels are provided and/or money can be directly donated via a check, money order, or online with a credit card.
Drop-off of cell phones is convenient and easy. There are over 40,000 registered drop-off locations throughout the country which can easily be found on the organization's website.
Specific soldiers can be requested so that they may be given prepaid calling cards. This is the only way to get the addresses for needy troops because the Department of Defense abides by a policy of never giving out information about deployed service people.

Reduce your Heating Bill
The holidays are almost here,Your wallet's getting thin.By saving on your heating bill,You and your gift-ees win!
Brrrrring it on!
Just because the weather outside is frightful, doesn't mean your energy bills have to be scary too! Keep warm this winter the green way and watch as your heating bill gradually begins to shrink.

First and foremost, winterize your home. Repair all cracks and holes near windows and doors and make sure your house is properly insulated. If you can't afford the construction necessary to re-insulate your whole house, consider this easy, cost-effective bubble wrap method for your windows.
Digital programmable thermostats are the latest tools being added to new homes (and to older ones with eco-friendly owners!). Set the thermostat to lower the temperature when you're at work or fast asleep. You won't notice the difference, but your heating bill will!
Installing solar panels may be a little expensive at first, but the warmth they provide at no monthly cost to you will soon make up for the initial charge...and tax credits may be available. If solar panels aren't in the realm of possibilities in your home, simply open up the drapes and blinds during cold winter days to allow the sunshine, and its heat, into your home.

Major League Baseball Goes Green
Take me out to the ball game, Where going green is the aim, Check on your team in the MLB, Are they becoming eco-friendly?

Clean-Up Position
Major League Baseball and the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) have teamed up to establish the Team Greening Program, which supports and coordinates the many environmentally sensitive practices now being pursued by almost every Major League Baseball Club.

Each team has received a customized green guide that features team-specific steps designed to help each organization understand eco-friendly practices and to help them evaluate and implement eco-intelligent decisions and actions.
The MLB keeps it green for the 80th All-Star Game and All-Star Week 2009. This included everything from the electricity used at Busch Stadium during the All-Star events being offset by purchased wind-energy certificates, to ensuring that all the stadium's toilet paper came from 100% post-consumer content.
The Philadelphia Phillies became the first Major League Baseball team to join the Environmental Protection Agency's Green Power Partnership. Amongst other eco-initiatives, the Phillies gave 100 fans a one-year credit to secure clean renewable energy for their home consumption and continue to provide the credit for all their employees.

Daylight Savings Ends
Time to turn the clocks backWave goodbye to the sunThere's more to do,Your yearly job's not done!
Did you remember to turn your clocks back? While you may not have forgotten this simple step, be sure to remember the following:

Smoke detector batteries should be tested, and in most cases, replaced, at least once a year, so why not now? Make the most out of your battery by choosing one with a longer life - just don't forget to test it out periodically for your safety.
Lawn sprinkler timers should be re-set at this time of year. With darkness and lower temperatures taking over more hours of the day, your lawn will stay damp longer, so reduce the amount of time you water your lawn if you live in a warmer climate. If you live in a colder climate, make sure you properly winterize your sprinkler system.
Prescription disposal should also be tackled on a yearly basis. You might be surprised at the expiration dates you find on those old antibiotics and pain killers in your medicine cabinet. Before you throw the bottles away or even think of flushing the pills (eek!), investigate drug take-back programs in your community.

Natural, Organic, and Fair TradeWhen you're stocking up on candy to feed all the trick-or-treaters this year, keep a few eco-friendly options in mind.

Natural candy will give you the widest range of goodies to choose from. Many online and retail shops carry everything from single serving gummy treats to mini-candy bars.
Organic candy is a healthy switch for kids -- they'll never even realize what took place. Sneak some organic lollipops or chocolate into the mix and ask them later if they noticed anything different.
Fair trade chocolate can give you piece of mind. Knowing that the candy being passed out to kids was made by adult workers with fair working and living conditions.

Make Your Own Halloween Costume
Witches, ghosts, and ghouls, At home you have the tools, Boxes, sheets, and brooms,To create your own costumes!
No Costumes
Halloween costumes can span from super expensive to extremely cheap, from wasteful one-time use to sustainable fun. This year, why not enjoy a green Halloween by creating your own costume or by participating in a costume exchange?

Use household items to make a costume. Cardboard boxes, sheets, fabric, yarn, makeup, soda cans, and many other things found around the house can be used to create great costumes.
Visit a thrift store or create a closet costume. The not-so fashionable clothes found in thrift stores and the old clothes and sports uniforms found in your very own closet can become amazing and hilarious costume ideas.
Borrow a friend's work uniform. If you have a friend with a recognizable uniform, such as a fast food worker or a delivery person, ask them to borrow it.
Participate in a costume exchange in which costumes are swapped or given away. You can either organize your own with friends and family or join an existing exchange.

Canning, Freezing, Jams & Jellies
Your organic garden'sgrowing fruit a-plenty,So why not can it for the winter,And give gifts to few...or twenty!
If you have a fruit tree or an organic garden, now is the time to preserve your crop and make it last throughout the winter. By freezing, canning or making jams and jellies out of summer fruits, you can save money, reduce waste, give wonderful holiday gifts and make the most out of your garden.

Freezing fruit is the simplest way of keeping excess fruit from going to waste and there are many different ways to freeze it. Some fruits freeze more effectively than others, but the best way to eat them after freezing is to make a frozen fruit smoothie!
Canning fruit is a bit more complex, but can help you keep fruit (and even some veggies) for up to 1 year, if done correctly. Some fruits and vegetables must be pre-cooked for best results and others are okay to be canned raw with syrup.
Jams and preserves can be made with the help of pectin, sugar and some glass jars. While the process takes a lot of work, the pay-off is grand when you're able to stuff your friends' and families' stockings with a homemade eco-friendly gift.

Eco-VacationsAs you make plans for the upcoming snow season, make sure your annual ski trip's a green one. Here are a few ideas on how to keep your carbon footprint as small as possible.

Don't litter and stay on all the marked areas along ski runs. Make sure to leave the slopes as you found them and not to disturb wildlife along the trails.
Green Snowboards have recently hit the shelves at your local ski and snow shops. Made from bamboo (a more renewable resource) and available in gorgeous natural designs, bamboo snowboards are not only a great ride, but are also unbelievably cool.

Apple Picking
Hey, it's harvest time,And farmers want to say, My orchards are most prime, Go apple picking today! As American as Apple Pie
As the trees change into their autumn outfits, they proudly announce the ripening of this year's apple crop and serve as the official invitation for families to visit their local orchard to start apple picking. By picking your own apples you not only enjoy the freshest fruit available, but you also support the livelihood of local farmers and orchards. Here are a few simple tips to follow on your apple picking adventure:

Ask the orchard owner/manager which trees flowered first in the spring. They will also be able to give you more information on the different apple varieties found in their orchards.
Select firm, bruise-free apples. Apples ripen from the outside of the tree to the center, so pick the ones located on the outer branches.
Don't jerk apples off the branches. The proper way is to roll the apple towards the tree branch and then twist it until the stem breaks free.
Apples are free of fat, cholesterol, and sodium, and contain small amounts of potassium, which may promote heart health, help maintain healthy blood pressure and a healthy weight.

Green KidsTake some time today or this weekend to plan eco-friendly ideas for your kids to enjoy. Show them how fun and easy it can be to keep their community green.

Growing a garden is a fun and easy eco-activity that kids always enjoy. For those with a yard, plot out a small portion for the garden. If you don't have that much space simply get a pot to grow in a windowsill. Let your kids pick the veggies they actually eat so your garden can be enjoyed for an organic dinner one day.
Get kids involved by looking for programs like California Youth Energy Services (CYES). Their goal is to educate kids and the community on how to lower energy usage throughout the home. Youth and young adults are trained as energy specialists who offer "green house calls" and a free energy audit for your home.
Video gamers can head online to play games that teach them facts and tips on how to stay green. Check out our Kids Corner for fun green games, jokes and ideas.

However and wherever you choose to celebrate Oktoberfest this year, keep in mind that even this festive occasion can be observed in an eco-friendly way.

Organic beer is brewed from barley and hops that have been grown without the use of pesticides or chemical fertilizers. Better for the environment and better for you! Not a beer drinker? See if your city's Oktoberfest is selling organic root beer.
Recycle Bottles - If you're drinking your beer out of a cold glass bottle, be sure to toss it in a recycling bin at the Oktoberfest event, or bring a reusable bag with you to tote bottles to a recycling center after the party.
Public Transportation - Don't drink and drive; instead, take the train or bus to your local Oktoberfest event, or if you're close enough, walk. These are not only the safest options, but the greenest ones too.
Support Local Breweries - Just like shopping at a farmer's market to support local farmers and reduce CO2 emissions from food transport, you can make the choice to buy local beer - for an Oktoberfest party or all year long!

Natural Hand SanitizerIf you're trying to avoid the fluAnd keep your hands clean tooChoose a sanitizer that's safe to useAnd is as easy on the earth as it is on you.All Natural vs. AntibacterialWith flu season around the corner and school starting, it's important to pick up the proper all natural hand sanitizers to fend off germs. Avoid picking up antibacterial sprays that contain harsh chemicals and can often do more harm than good. Hand sanitizers that you'll typically find in stores can contain lots of scary chemicals like Triclosan & Benzalkonium Chloride, which overkill germs on the hand (whether good or bad) and actually cause bacteria to grow stronger. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water. Lather up, then rub your hands together for about 20 seconds. That's about the time it takes to sing the "Happy Birthday" song twice. If you are not near a sink, use a hand sanitizer containing at least 60 percent alcohol. Sanitize your hands the safer way by choosing natural hand purifiers. Pick products made from all natural or certified organic ingredients to keep your family safe during the upcoming cold season.

Reclaimed WoodChainsaws buzz and chop,Deforestation has to stop. Why cut down a living tree?Reclaimed wood is the key.Wood You Give Me A Second Chance? Reclaimed wood is simply wood that has been salvaged and repurposed to give it an extended or second useful life. Its sources can include wood from railroad ties, sunken logs, weathered barn siding, abandoned factories and warehouses, deserted army barracks, and trees felled by storms. Reclaimed wood products offer many environmental, structural, and aesthetic benefits.Reduce, recycle, reuse - Recycling and reusing old wood reduces both the number of new trees cut down and the amount of wood entering the waste stream. To be sure that your reclaimed wood was obtained in an environmentally friendly way, be sure the Forest Stewardship Council or the Rainforest Alliance's SmartWood Program has certified it. Protects existing old growth forests - Using reclaimed wood offers the highly desirable structural benefits of old growth wood while still protecting the few existing old growth forests we have left. Responsible use of exotic woods - Rare and protected tree woods can be found as reclaimed woods without illegally and/or unsustainably killing existing trees. Provides a unique history - With each piece of old growth wood comes a unique history seen in its distinct colors, grains, markings, and patinas.

Reuse Old ShoesIf you've got an extra pair of shoesAnd they're almost as good as newDonate old sneakers to be reusedGlobal Treads recycles them for you.The Gift of ShoesMaybe they were a gift or they're just not your style, but whatever the reason, grab those sneakers that have just been collecting dust and donate them to underprivileged communities around the world.Donate old shoes to companies like Global Treads, a non-profit organization providing shoes for men, women and children locally and worldwide. Through generous donations of new and lightly used shoes, Global Treads is able to provide footwear to individuals in impoverished areas.Global Treads stemmed when founder (and avid runner) Julie Davis noticed an abundance of used shoes, still in great condition that were no longer being used in her closet. Take a peek inside your closet to see if you might have an extra pair (or two) of shoes that you haven't worn in a while to donate.Take it a step further and rally your local school, mission or church together for a shoe drive. Your generosity will help put shoes on people where owning a pair is considered a luxury.

International Coastal Cleanup DayWhat's that floating in the sea?Tons of our trash and debris, So take action without delay, Sign up for Coastal Cleanup Day!Life's a Beach...Clean It Up!On September 19th, organizations and individuals will participate in the Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup, a worldwide volunteer event that engages the public to remove trash and debris from our planet's beaches and waterways. Oceanic pollution is a very serious issue and one in which we must become the solution. A stark example of its severity is the "Great Pacific Garbage Patch."The "Great Pacific Garbage Patch" is a giant floating debris field roughly the size of Texas that stretches approximately 500 nautical miles from the coast of California to Japan. The patch has been created over many years by trash and debris blown from the land, tossed from ships and oil platforms, and washed directly into the sea from storm drains. The majority of the patch consists of broken down plastic bits floating just under the water's surface like confetti, basically a soupy mix of plastic-filled seawater laden with the toxic chemical Bisphenol A. UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) has reported that plastic accounts for 90% of all floating debris in the oceans. Every square mile of our seas contains upwards of 46,000 pieces.

Onion FuelOnions may make you cry, But they can be a fuel supply.Onion juice ferments you see, Waste becomes energy!Crying All the Way to the Bank In Oxnard, California, Gills Onions, a national onion processor and distributor, has constructed an Advanced Energy Recovery System (AERS) that converts 100% of their onion waste into ultra-clean renewable energy and a high-value cattle feed. The AERS creates enough methane biogas to power two onsite 300-kilowatt fuel cells, which operate the plant's refrigeration units and lighting.Like a Big Stomach: Juice extracted from onion waste is sent to ferment in an anaerobic digester that contains bacteria from an Anheuser-Busch beer brewery. The bacteria feast on the carbohydrates in the fermenting juice and produce combustible methane gas. Cost Savings: The AERS provides annual savings of $700,000 in electricity costs, $400,000 in disposal costs, and has lead to more than $3 million in government and power company incentives.GHG Reductions: The AERS eliminates up to 30,000 tons of carbon dioxide-equivalent emissions per year. Waste-To-Energy: Gills Onions is one of many companies using their biomass waste to create energy. Other types of biomass waste employed include animal manure, vegetable oil, whey, municipal solid waste, and industrial wastes.

How Pure Is Bottled Water? Crystal-clear, pure, and pristine, Is bottled water really that clean? Labels don't mention contamination, Bottled water needs better regulation.Bottled What?On the national level, the FDA is solely responsible for bottled water purity and safety, but the FDA's rules exempt waters that are packaged and sold within the same state, which account for between 60 and 70 percent of all bottled water sold in the U.S.The FDA permits bottlers to label their product "spring water" even though it may be brought to the surface using a pumped well and may have been treated with chemicals.Contrary to tap water rules, the FDA does not require bottled water to be disinfected or tested for parasites such as cryptosporidium or giardia. The bottled water industry is not required to disclose any of its contaminant testing results, increasing the possibility of health risks to infants, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems. In a four-year study, the National Resource Defense Council tested the purity and safety of 1,000 bottles of 103 brands of bottled water. They concluded that about one-third of the bottles contained contamination, including synthetic organic chemicals, bacteria, and arsenic.

As there's little chance of erasing our past environmental mistakes, these jobs will likely not disappear. More and more companies are seeking green representatives and adopting sustainable practices. This means green jobs have the potential for substantial growth, helping unemployment rates and the economy as well. Many green jobs can pay extremely well if you're willing to put forth the time and effort. Environmental engineers can make upwards of $80,000 a year; sustainable-design architects average between $50,000 and $200,000 for their salary and environmental lawyers generally begin at $75,000 and can earn up to $500,000 a year.
Pool Chlorine Alternatives
Splish, Splash, I'm developing a rash, Red eyes and green hair, It's time for natural pool care!
Marco...Polo...Chlorine Out of Water?
Danger lurks in our nation's swimming pools... It contaminates the earth's soil and water and it evaporates into the atmosphere where it eats away at the ozone layer. The culprit is chlorine and it is found in many popular swimming pool chemicals such as calcium and sodium hypochlorite. Protect your health and that of the environment by choosing natural pool cleaning alternatives.

Salt Water: Salt water or saline pools use small portions of salt to clean water through electrolysis. To some, this may not be the greenest option due to the fact that it still utilizes chlorine albeit in a natural, bacteria-fighting, and non-threatening form.
Ionization: Ionic pools use small amounts of metals such as copper and silver to kill bacteria and stop algal growth.
Oxidation: Oxidation pools use UV light or electricity to produce ozone, which disinfects the water.
Sonic Waves: New sonic wave pools use specific patterns of sound waves to kill algae and contaminants.
Natural Pools: Natural or green pools use external or internal plants to create mini ecosystems that enrich the pool water with oxygen, support beneficial bacteria that consume debris and contaminants, and deprive algae of nutrients.
Natural Products: If you do not want to convert to a new system, one option is to use natural cleaning products such as PristineBlue and Natural Chemistry.

Public TransportationWhen you're stuck in a jam, eyes fixed on the road When the gas stations increase their prices to gold When you realize just how much your car can pollute You'll start using mass transit to make your commute! In 2008, a U.S. Commuting Statistical Analysis showed that there were over 128 million U.S. commuters, 75% of whom drive to work themselves. Less than 5% of all commuters used public transportation last year, a surprisingly low amount when you consider all the benefits. By carpooling, using buses, subways or trains, you can save money, shorten your commute, decrease your blood pressure due to road rage, increase your leisure time and of course, lessen your impact on the environment. Here's how:Trains: Commuting by train instead of by car cuts CO2 emissions per passenger by about 75%, not to mention the average train can travel almost two times as fast as your coupe! Buses: Not only do buses reduce the amount of traffic and vehicle pollution by each taking an average of 60 cars off the road, but buses are also over 170 times safer than cars according to the National Safety Council.RideShare Programs: If every commuter car carried an extra passenger, eliminating half the automobiles on the road, the U.S. would save eight billion gallons of gas each year and cut CO2 emissions from cars by 50%. Sharing the cost of gas and reducing traffic on the road isn't bad either! Contact your employer to see if you have any RideShare programs through work or visit Enterprise's vanpool site for more information: http://www.vanpool.com/

Radioactive Drywall It's banned by the EPA, But it still made its way,Be sure you didn't installRadioactive drywall!Dr. Phosphogypsum I Presume In 2006, as a result of an American housing boom, Hurricane Katrina, and the inability of U.S. manufacturers to meet demands, Chinese exports of drywall jumped 17-fold. Unfortunately, most Chinese drywall manufacturers use a cheap and unrestricted radioactive industrial waste byproduct called phosphogypsum. Only recently has this become a topic of concern when U.S. homeowners began noticing foul odors seeping from walls and reported corrosion to their air conditioners, mirrors, electrical outlets, and jewelry. Although preliminary tests have been inconclusive, here's what we know so far:In 1989, the EPA banned phosphogypsum for U.S construction because it contains radium, which can lead to a higher risk of lung cancer. China is absolutely littered with huge phosphogypsum dumpsites. A top manager at a Chinese supplier of gypsum-processing equipment estimates that 80% of Chinese drywall makers use phosphogypsum. According to Chinese customs' statistics, in 2006 Chinese exports of drywall to the U.S. totaled a record 503 million pounds valued at more than $25 million. That's enough drywall for 32,000 American homes. No U.S. inspection or mandatory testing requirements exist for imported drywall. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has received more than 608 incident reports from 21 states and the District of Columbia, with most coming from Florida, Louisiana, and Virginia.

Sure, the archaeologists of the future may not have as much to dig up a few thousand years from now, but a cleaner world is the greatest gift we can leave behind.Snack Chip Bags: Starting in 2010, Frito Lay's Sun Chips will be packaged in biodegradable bags that completely disappear in compost bins within about 14 weeks. Simply snack, then give back to the Earth. The shelf life of the bags is the same so you don't have to worry about these bags disintegrating in your pantry!Food Service Utensils: Many online companies such as www.biodegradablestore.com have created utensils, cups, napkins and other food service items from corn plastics as well as bagasse. Corn plastics biodegrade in commercial compost bins within 45 days and bagasse products (made from used sugarcane stalks) biodegrade within about 60 days. If you run a business, this is definitely the way to reduce your company's footprint!Pens: It is estimated that about 10 billion plastic pens are dumped in landfills across the world each year. We all need them at some point, whether it's to sign our John Hancocks or write a book report, so why not make your next pen biodegradable? Shepenco (www.shepenco.com/) promises that in a proper compost bin, the barrels of their newest biodegradable pens will compost in about three months.

No Grey AreasNext time you're hitting the showersSave a few drops to water your flowersCollect greywater while you soap up and scrubBy placing a big bucket at the end of the tub.Recycled WaterGreywater includes any and all wash water that can be collected, from showers to hand washing clothes. It does not include wastewater from toilets or garbage disposals which is commonly known as "blackwater". While you're waiting for the shower to heat up or daydreaming under the spout, place a big bucket in the corner to collect the extra runoff from going down the drain. Use greywater to hydrate your plants or lawn during the hot summer months. If you plan on upgrading your home or are willing to make more of an investment, a greywater system is the perfect fit for an eco-homeowner. State-of-the-art systems filter used water from the shower, bath and laundry and then reuse it in the toilet's flushing system. In addition to placing a bucket in the corner of your shower, try lowering usage in other ways too. Run the washing machine and dishwasher when they're completely full, or try innovative new products like a waterless car wash.

Landfills How much trash can we bury? Landfills don't have a garbage fairy, It's time to lend a helping hand, Reduce your waste and take a stand.Landfilled to the BrimIt seems like we all know the trash man's schedule; however, it's an entirely different story when it comes to knowing exactly where our trash goes or what actually happens to it. In the U.S., about 32.5% of solid waste is recycled, 12.5% is burned, and 55% is buried in landfills. The use of landfills has doubled since the 1960s creating a huge, smelly problem. Let's get to know the modern-day landfill.Landfills are built into or on top of the ground. Trash is isolated from the surrounding groundwater, air, and rain by a bottom liner and a daily covering of soil. Landfills are designed to bury trash not break it down. With little oxygen and moisture available, garbage decomposes extremely slowly. For example, 40-year-old newspapers with easily readable print have been excavated from landfills. It's important to remember that some materials may be banned from disposal in municipal solid waste landfills and shouldn't be placed in your trash can. This includes paints, cleaners/chemicals, motor oil, batteries, pesticides, household appliances such as window air conditioners and refrigerators, and other dangerous/ toxic products. Practice the "Three R's" in your home to reduce the ever-growing municipal solid waste stream at the source. Landfills can, do, and will fill up quickly and be forced to close.

Safe Seafood If you want to cure hunger and widespread famine,You won't answer this problem with farm-raised salmon. The conditions they're raised in can be very sub-par,Instead try to eat salmon where the wild fish are.Something Smells FishyFor a fine meal with numerous health rewards, salmon's all the rage. A low-cal culinary treat with beneficial omega-3 fatty acids, salmon is served for dinner on a weekly basis in many U.S. homes. However, what many people don't know about salmon could be hurting them:Most grocery store chains sell farm-raised salmon which could be coming from farms where they're overfed toxin-laden food and kept in crowded conditions amongst their own waste and open-tank pollutants.Farm-raised salmon may ingest polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from their feed, a toxin that, with high levels of exposure, can cause a number of serious ailments in humans including cancer, heart disease, liver damage and Parkinson's Disease, just to name a few.Salmon that escape from their farms can also spread diseases and parasites amongst wild salmon as well as deplete their resources. Protecting wild salmon communities in their natural environment is crucial to the circle of life!Wild salmon can be purchased at your local Trader Joe's, Whole Foods or other natural markets. When in season wild caught sockeye salmon can even be purchased at Costco, but be care-ful farm raised salmon sits side by side with wild. In addition, nearly all canned salmon is wild - so you don't have to completely cut salmon out of your diet to avoid the PCBs.

Eco-Friendlier School Buses With summer vacation coming to an endThe school year's looming around the bendEncourage your school to get greener busesA cleaner environment is just one of the pluses.Green is the New YellowAs the school year rapidly approaches, it's time to start thinking of ways to encourage your school to green their fleet of outdated big yellow school buses. Not only will it help the environment, but it will also lower your family's exposure to pollutants.IC Bus (the "Yellow School Bus") is the only school bus manufacturer making hybrid buses today. Work with school boards to make sure your school's next bus purchase is a hybrid electric. Federal programs such as the Clean School Bus Program can also help provide funding assistance. If hybrid buses are slightly out of your school's range, there is always the option of refurbishing older buses to be more environmentally friendly. With costs starting at around $600, it's the more affordable option for schools trying to lower pollutants in their buses.Another way school buses have cut down is by starting an anti-idling program and encouraging school bus drivers to turn off their engines when not in use. An idling school bus can consume a half-gallon of fuel per hour.

"Clean" Coal? What is "clean" coal? Ask the O-zone hole, Until CO2 is not an issue, It's as "clean" as used tissue."Clean Carbon is Like a Healthy Cigarette"The harsh reality is that "clean" coal does not exist in the United States today. Coal is considered "clean" when its CO2 emissions are captured, transported, and stored properly. There is not a single American home, factory, school, or shopping mall powered by "clean" coal. What we do have is 600 coal-fired power plants spewing out 32% of U.S. CO2 emissions each year. Can coal really be "clean?"The burning of coal is the dirtiest, most carbon intensive way we produce electricity. From extraction to combustion, from coalmine to the atmosphere, coal harms the environment every step of the way as it simply moves pollutants from one waste stream to another. Coal-fired plants are the single largest source of mercury pollution in the U.S. It's been discovered that 50% of the mercury emitted from plants can travel up to 600 miles away. The U.S. coal industry is spending millions on ads for "clean" coal, but there is not a single "clean" coal power plant in operation or under construction. Moreover, 70 new plants have been proposed, with only a handful committed to combating their CO2 emissions. For coal to have a future in the energy arena, the coal industry and its investors must immediately develop and integrate commercial-scale carbon capture, transport, and sequestration systems. Furthermore, U.S. environmental standards, rules, practices, and carbon policies must be properly constructed and adopted.
